For tasty smoothies, wraps, and other vegetarian specialties, head down the street to Natural Sisters Cafe, 61695B Twentynine Palms Hwy. (tel. 760/366-3600). For coffee, gourmet takeout fare, including calzones, wraps, and a number of vegan dishes, and an eclectic store with everything from newspapers, to wine, to fashion, stop at Ricochet Gourmet, 61705 Twentynine Palms Hwy. (tel. 760/366-1898; www.ricochetjoshuatree.com). After undergoing a major face-lift, and getting new owners in 2011, Crossroads Cafe, 61715 Twentynine Palms Hwy. (tel. 760/366-5414; www.crossroadscafejtree.com), is a beloved local institution, with creative and healthy breakfasts and lunches and plenty to look at on the walls.
Picnic Supplies
You can stock up for picnicking or camping on the way into Yucca Valley, where Wal-Mart, Von's, and Stater Brothers loom large on Hwy. 62, along with every fast-food joint you can imagine. Both Crossroads Cafe and Ricochet are good places to pick up sandwiches, salads, and other takeout dishes.
