Pacific Sun (tel. 800/294-4864 in the U.S., or 672 0888; and Air Fiji (tel. 877/247-3454 in the U.S., 0800 347 3624 in Fiji or 672 2521; both fly to Kadavu daily from Nadi and Suva, respectively. Round-trip fare from Nadi on Pacific Sun is about F$182 (US$118/£61); from Suva on Air Fiji it is about F$222 (US$144/£74). The flights usually arrive and depart about midday, but they are notoriously late. The airstrip is at Vunisea, about midway along the island.

Small ships haul supplies and passengers from Suva to Kadavu weekly, but the service is unreliable and anything but punctual. Fly instead.

The two dirt roads on the western end of Kadavu do not go anywhere near the accommodations, and a public transportation system is nonexistent. Consequently, there is no "Exploring Kadavu" section in this chapter because it cannot be done.

You will have to ride a boat to the resorts -- 10 minutes to Dive Kadavu/Matana Beach Resort, 30 minutes to Papageno Resort, 45 minutes or more to Matava -- The Astrolabe Hideaway, and an hour or more to the eastern end. Transfers usually are in small, open speedboats, so bring sun protection and light rain gear with you. No piers or wharfs have been built at the Vunisea airstrip or at the resorts, so you will get your feet wet wading ashore both coming and going.

Local boats land on both sides of the Namalata Isthmus, at the government wharf on the north, and at Galoa Harbour on the south. Really adventurous souls can hitch a ride or pay the owners for water taxi service, but it's an unreliable way to get around and most of the boats lack safety equipment.

Bring Local Currency -- A post office and rudimentary hospital are in Vunisea, but Kadavu does not have a bank. Some but not all of the accommodations accept MasterCard and Visa credit cards, so bring sufficient Fijian currency if yours does not.
