Frommer's Staff

From the town's marketplace, you can wander over to Stortorget to visit this 17th-century cathedral. Kalmar Cathedral is the only one in Sweden without a bishop, but it's still an impressive building. The bright, massive space of the interior is a reminder that the cathedral was built when Sweden was one of the great European powers. It was designed in 1660 by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder in the Italian Renaissance style. (Tessin visited Rome and found his inspiration there.) The altar was designed by Tessin the Younger, and it shimmers with gold. It's surrounded by a series of sculptures, such as a depiction of "Faith" and one of "Mercy."
