Frommer's Staff

Originally built in the 13th century, the present castle underwent several redesigns at the hands of the Frankopans and the French, but the exterior has since been restored to some semblance of its former medieval splendor. Inside, the castle has seen better days, and renovation is afoot, but one hotelier says there are plans to eventually turn the building into a youth hostel. You can walk from town to the castle, which is a little over a mile due west of the center, but the steep grade can be challenging. The easiest way to get to Dubovac Castle is by car. Either way, the panoramic view of the city and the rivers that run through it is worth the effort.
