Kashgar's hotel scene is developing, little by little, and along with the old stalwarts, there's now some new competition in the mid-range and luxury market. Two of the most popular hotels, the Chini Bagh and the Seman, are located on the grounds of the former British and Russian consulates, respectively. The former enjoys a great location; the latter offers the rare opportunity to escape the bland uniformity of mainstream hotel rooms in China. The decision to be made in Kashgar is whether you want luxury or proximity to the "real Kashgar" because with the current options, it's one or the other.
