This gem of a course—the first on the island to be designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.—has extra luster now that the nearby Prince Course has gone private. It’s already gained favor with nongolfers by offering self-guided sunset golf cart tours ★★★ ($60 per cart; 808/826-1863), with a map to memorable vistas, flora, and fauna (including nesting Laysan albatross in winter), plus sunrise yoga on the 7th hole at 7:30am Monday and Wednesday ($20; cash only). For golfers, it’s worth noting that Jones returned in 2009 to remake the 27 holes he created here in 1971. The resulting 18-hole championship Makai Course winds around ocean bluffs and tropical forest with compelling sea and mountain views, including Mount Makana. There’s a “time par” of 4 hours, 18 minutes, here, to keep golfers on track (otherwise they might be gawking at the scenery all day). Sadly, the family-friendly 9-hole Woods Course is in rough shape, and likely not worth taking a swing at. Other facilities include a clubhouse, a pro shop, practice facilities, the Makai Grill restaurant, and club rentals. Note: “Dynamic” pricing means greens fees vary by time, season, and demand, but all guests of a Kauai hotel are eligible for a $225 rate.
