Makawehi Point, a lithified sand dune, juts out from the eastern end of this beach, whose Hawaiian name means “the long sand.” Harrison Ford and Anne Heche jumped off Makawehi in Six Days, Seven Nights (don’t try it yourself), while bodysurfers and boogie-boarders find the roiling waters equally exhilarating. Novices should enjoy their antics from the shore or follow the ironwood trees to the path to the top of Makawehi Point, which is also the start of the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail. A paved beach path in front of the Grand Hyatt Kauai leads west past tide pools to the blustery point at Makahuena, perfect for photographing Makawehi Point. Restrooms and showers are by the small parking lot on Ainako Street.
