Opened in 2014 in the former Grove Café (and before that, the Waimea Brewing Co.) in the Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages compound of vintage wood-framed buildings, the newest of the three Kalapaki Joe’s sports bar/restaurants boasts not only the best location but also the largest number of beers on tap (24). The list of burgers, sandwiches, meal-size salads, and Mexican items—tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas—is even more extensive; you can fill up just as easily from the appetizer menu. It’s typical Mainland pub grub, but you can also order dishes with a local twist, such as kalua pork and seared cabbage with warm flour tortillas, the fresh ahi and avocado poke, or the fish of the day, grilled with a guava jelly glaze and topped with roasted macadamia nuts. Deep discounts at happy hour ($3 fish tacos, $1 shrimp tempura, and 25[ce] chicken wings) and its convenience factor as the first pit stop heading back from Waimea Canyon mean it’s often packed in late afternoons, as well as when any major sporting event is broadcast.
