John-Paul Gordon is yet another Kauai chef taking inspiration from the bounty of local fields and fishing grounds, with an admirably inventive palate and a well-practiced eye for presentation. Although his menu is largely seasonal, the “fish rockets” starter of seared ahi in lumpia wrappers with wasabi aioli is a signature dish; Kauai beef sirloin and grilled pork chops are standards. If you crave something lighter, order a salad with local goat cheese and almonds or the grilled fresh catch, perhaps with a baby spinach ragu. Lunch includes simpler but satisfying options such as a Kauai beef burger or fish sandwich. The wine list is reasonably priced; ask about the $5 daily happy hour special, which you can pair with live slack key guitar Thursday and soft jazz on Saturday. In 2015, the owners opened Palate Wine Bar ★ (www.palatewinebar.net; 808/212-1974) a few doors down at 2474 Keneke St. The wine bar serves small plates ($7–$28) and flatbreads and entrees ($20–$36) from 5 to 10pm daily, with quality wine and beer starting at $8 a glass. If you like what you drink, buy more at the Palate Market next door.
