Audubon House & Tropical Gardens

A manse built by one of the many rich shipwreck salvagers on the island, it’s a kind of museum of that period, named after iconic painter and naturalist John James Audubon, who paid a visit to the house and included its flora in his work during an 1832 research trip. A number of first-edition Audubons are on display, along with furnishings reflecting the lives of well-heeled locals circa the mid-19th century (such is the proprietors’ devotion to accuracy that at one point they swapped out a flashy Biedermeier credenza for a plainer one more in keeping with the time and place). A newer addition out back in the lovely 1-acre garden is an antique-furnished re-creation of an outdoor kitchen. The nature-focused gift shop/art gallery makes for a charming browse as well. Note: This is a popular spot for weddings, so it may occasionally close early (especially on weekends).
