A neo-Gothic mansion on the outskirts of Killarney National Park, Cahernane is a luxurious retreat. The decor is authentically grandiose: Public areas have the feel of a traditional gentlemen’s club, filled with antique furniture, stag heads on the wall, and the scent of a peat fire hanging heavy in the air. Guest rooms are more modern, though no less elegant, and some bathrooms have deep claw-foot tubs. Many of the rooms have private patios. The house has two restaurants—the excellent, formal Herbert Room, and the more relaxed Cellar Bar, where you can take lighter meals among the beautifully lit arches of the old wine cellar. Fields and farmland surround the hotel, and the misty mountains of the park linger in the distance. Check the website for special offers, including dinner/bed-and-breakfast deals.
