Water Street Inn
This three-story brick manor, dating to 1879, got a contempory update a few years back that still preserved a lot of historical character. Guests receive a door code for keyless self–check-in, then walk into a common area with a self-service coffee and snack bar and a mix of mod furnishings and vintage fixtures. The rooms — including two studios in an adjacent building, one with a loft — feel more boutique-y than B&B-y, although there nods throughout to the area’s history and maritime character, old maps and plaques commemorating the flat-bottom barges that once cruised the Piscataquis River. Great gardens outside.
