The architecture of this impressive house of worship on Trg Vela Placa is like a tangible timeline that spans 13 centuries, as it was built on the site of a 5th-century basilica during the 13th century and fitted with a bell tower in the 18th. The cathedral sits on the site of a 9th-century monastery, which in turn sits on the former site of the city's Roman baths. In fact, a unique feature of the cathedral's design is its utilization of pillars salvaged from a variety of Roman structures. You can see a little of the interior through the vestibule doors if you happen by when the cathedral is closed. However, try to be there when the cathedral is open so you can see the Roman columns, ancient mosaics, interesting paintings, and early stone carvings. The cathedral abuts a square with several examples of Frankopan architecture, where many concerts and cultural events are held.
