Open since 1868 and tucked behind an inner courtyard off bustling Shijo Dori, this modestly decorated restaurant offers a variety of Japanese dishes at moderate prices, making it a very good value. Its English-language menu offers many choices, including soba noodles starting at ¥750, bento box lunches for ¥1,890, and Kyoto specialties like the yuba set meal for ¥3,900 (yuba is a low-calorie curd made from soy milk). For a splurge there are seasonal kaiseki meals, as well as less elaborate mini-kaiseki meals. With its convenient yet buffered location in the heart of downtown, this is a good choice for high-quality meals at reasonable prices, in a peaceful and relaxing setting.
