La Cumbre is becoming increasingly famous for adventure sports, particularly paragliding. A beauty spot called Cuchi Corral is a 300m (984-ft.) cliff that overlooks the Rio Pintos valley. Here you'll find a variety of amateurs and professionals hurling themselves into the air and soaring with condors. In 1999, the town hosted the World Paragliding Championship. Other sights worth seeing include Estancia El Rosario, 6km (3 3/4 miles) southeast (tel. 354/845-1257), home of the ubiquitous alfajores -- a dulce de leche biscuit sandwich popular all over Argentina, and a must-buy souvenir for visiting tourists. In the nearby village of Cruz Chica, you'll find El Paraíso (tel. 354/849-1596), the home of famous Argentine writer Manuel Mujica Lainez and now a museum dedicated to this fascinating character's life. To the north of La Cumbre, near the village of Capilla del Monte, is a mountain known as Mount Uritorco, popular with trekkers. The mountain is also a mecca for fans of the supernatural, with a reputedly unique energy source and powerful healing properties. The area is famous for UFO sightings as well. You can investigate this phenomenon at a specially built UFO center called OVNI Center, Intendente Cabus 237, Capilla del Monte (tel. 354/845-1257). Farther east, along a dirt track, you'll find Parque Natural Ongamira, a weird and wonderful moonscape of pink rock amid green rolling hills.
