Drug Trade on the Rise in La Mosquitia

As the drug war in Mexico and South America spreads throughout Central America, La Mosquitia, in particular, has been affected greatly. The lack of police presence in the region has allowed shipments of drugs to pass freely. You'll occasionally see men with decked-out SUVs in otherwise poor communities and occasionally hear the sounds of small planes in the night. It is rare that the drug trade affects a passing tourist in the region. The dealers pretty much stick to themselves, and they aren't trying to peddle their goods to the local communities. Still, these types are best avoided, so stay away from the seedy discos and pubs that tend to attract them.
