If you're looking for generous portions of traditional Italian cuisine in a charming setting in the heart of Bellagio, and you don't need lake views to go with it, Trattoria San Giacomo is a great choice. Set at the base of a broad flight of cobblestone stairs, this restaurant appeals to all palates, serving a nice mix of classic, familiar Italian fare such as fettuccine with tomato and basil and osso buco, as well as lakefish appetizers and mains, gourmet cheese plates, and even hamburgers. All fish and meat entrees come with a veggie contorno, which is a nice touch, as you usually have to order vegetables separately in Italy. Desserts and pastries are all made in-house, and the wine list is impressive.
You can either dine outside amid the picturesque, ye-olde-Italian-village street scene, or in the warm dining room, which features pink walls and warm woods. It's a popular place and you'd be wise to book ahead in high season, but even if you haven't reserved and there's a wait, the restaurant will give you a cushion to plop down on the stone stairs, and you can get a prosecco from the bar across the way while you wait and people-watch—la dolce vita, indeed!
