Introduction in Lamego
130km (70 miles) E of Porto; 350km (220 miles) N of Lisbon.
Set back from the south bank of the Douro this is another charming small town in the heart of wine country. Highlights include a marvelous hilltop church, an exceptional museum and mouthwatering ham pies.
ARRIVING
BY BUS—Rede Expressos has 2–5 daily buses from Lisbon. The journey lasts 5hrs and costs 19.50€. From Porto there's only one direct bus, leaving at 5:15pm on weekdays. The trip lasts 2hrs and costs 11€. Others require a change in Vila Real or Viseu.
BY TRAIN—There is no rail link to Lamego but you can take the scenic train that runs along the Douro from Porto to Régua. From there it's a 15 minute bus trip to Lamego.
BY CAR—It takes just over 3hrs to get there from Lisbon. Take the A1 autostrada north. Switch to IP3 at Coimbra, then take exit 9 in Viseu to join the A24. From Porto, the fastest way is to take the A4 east to Vila Real, then head south on the A24. It takes about 1hr 20 mins.
