Tha Khek: Part of a series of towns strung out along the Mekong through Laos, Tha Khek has been recently restored. It's now a lovely place to contemplate the might of the Mekong to your front and the splendor of the Khammouane Mountains to your back.
Nong Kiaow: This small town boasts one of the most beautiful settings in Asia. It is surrounded by towering limestone mountains fronting fantastic river views.
Vieng Xai: Once the headquarters of the Pathet Lao, this stunningly scenic area is tinged with sadness. Although Communist victory was planned and executed from here, it was also a place where many internees of the previous regime perished through neglect.
