Since Las Galeras lies in a luxuriant and remote part of the Dominican Republic, you might consider renting a jeep or a small car if you don't mind potholed roads. The surrounding terrain is Jungle Jim country, and there are many beautiful, secluded beaches within a short distance. Chances are, you might discover an isolated playa just for you and yours. A local agency, Adventure Rent Car (tel. 809/383-5061) serves the town of Samaná, Las Terrenas, and Las Galeras. The agency has a well-maintained fleet of cars and also rents motorcycles, scooters, and ATVs. For the back roads of the peninsula, including day trips to Playa Rincón and Playa del Valle, a cycle or ATV is recommended.

Without a car, you can rely on one of the motoconchos that run throughout the area all day. You might see an occasional independently operated taxi or two, but don't count on it.
