Leicester Guildhall
Built in stages between the 14th and 16th centuries, the city's most prominent public building was Leicester's first town hall and contains one of the oldest libraries in Britain. Plaques commemorate its role as a die-hard last bastion of the Parliamentarians during the civil war. On its ground floor, you'll see a 19th-century police station with a pair of original prison cells, whose mournful graffiti are a powerful testimony to the horrors of the Victorian penal system. Shakespeare's troupe is said to have appeared here.
