Getting There

By Plane -- You can fly from Stockholm on Skyways (tel. 0771/95-95-00; www.skyways.se); the nearest airport is Dala-Airport (tel. 0243/645-00), in Borlänge, 50km (31 miles) south, from which there is frequent bus and train service to Leksand. Car rentals are available at the airport.

By Train -- There's a direct train from Stockholm to Mora that stops in Leksand (travel time: 3 1/2 hr.). For reservations and information, call tel. 771/75-75-75.

By Boat -- Another way to reach Leksand is on the Gustaf Wasa; call tel. 010/252-32-92 for information and reservations. Every Monday at 3pm it makes one long trip from Mora to Leksand (through Rättvik). The round-trip fare is 150SEK ($30/£15) for adults, 75SEK ($15/£7.50) for children. Tickets are sold onboard. The return is by train.

By Car -- From Falun, our last stopover, head north on Route 80 to Bjursås, then go west on a secondary road signposted as SÅGMYRA. Follow the signs into Leksand.

Special Events

Sweden's biggest music festival, Music at Lake Siljan, takes place during the first week of July. There are some 100 concerts covering a wide range of music at venues in both Leksand and Rättvik.
