Lindau is connected to the mainland by a road bridge and a causeway for walkers and trains. It's a transportation link between the western part of Lake Constance and the towns of Austria and Switzerland, which lie directly across the water. Regional flights come in to the Friedrichshafen airport. The nearest major airport is Zürich.
The Lindau Bahnhof is on the major Basel-Singen-Radolfzell-Lindau and Lindau-Kissleg-Memmingen-Buchloe rail lines, with frequent connections in all directions. Direct trains from both Munich and Stuttgart leave every 2 hours and take 2 3/4 hours. Call tel. 01805/996633, or visit www.bahn.de for information.
Regional bus service along Lake Constance is offered by RAB Regionalverkehr Alb-Bodensee GmbH (tel. 0751/2766; www.zugbus-rab.de).
Three to five ferries per day (depending on the season) link Lindau with Konstanz and Bregenz in Austria. Boats from Konstanz stop at Mainau, Meersburg, and Friedrichshafen before Lindau and Bregenz; the entire trip takes no less than 3 hours. Call BSB (tel. 08382/275840; www.bsb-online.com), or the tourist office for information and schedules.
Access by car from Munich is via the north-south A96 and the B31, skirting the northern shore of the lake.
