Getting There -- The nearest railway stations are at St. Johann in Tyrol and at Saalfelden. From Saalfelden, nine buses depart every day for the 39km (24-mile) trek to the northwest. From St. Johann, 10 buses depart daily for the 43km (27-mile) ride northeast to Lofer. Note that some bus routes, traversing the strip of Germany that juts into Austria at this point, travel directly from Salzburg's railway station about five times a day; the trip takes about an hour. If you choose this route, you might be asked to show your passport.

Motorists can take Route 305 southwest of Salzburg through Germany, and then continue southwest at the junction with Route 312.
