The capital of the province of La Rioja, Logroño is also the major distribution center for the area's wines and agricultural products. Because La Rioja is so small, Logroño can serve as your base for touring the province's major attractions. Although much of Logroño is modern and dull, its Old Quarter is known to the pilgrims crossing this region to visit the tomb of St. James at Santiago de Compostela. Encased in medieval walls, the Old Quarter can be explored in about 1 1/2 hours. Its most typical and beautiful streets are Muro Francisco de la Mata and Breton de los Herreros.
