Every city needs a few unabashedly basic, secure choices that aren’t grim. Rooms are tiny, freshly painted in canary yellow and done up with lace curtains, and there are generous touches such as baskets of potpourri. Rooms also boast TVs (albeit teeny ones), but no phones. Bathrooms (most rooms have their own, with toilet) are essentially tiled cubicles with drains in the floor, but the £100 family room for four is a true steal. Room 9, a double, is located on a landing facing the back, so it’s even quieter than most. If you’re only staying on weekdays, ask for a special deal, because the hotel sees a lot of weekend trade. Private bathrooms cost £10 to £15 more. Seriously, what more do you require?
