Montcalm Mayfair

Approachably elegant with tactful service to match, this luxury newcomer in a crescent-shaped building (gut renovated for 2 years and reopened in 2025) is seductive. Although it’s steps from the fray of Oxford Street, the bespoke furniture done in creams, beiges, and fern greens put a guest in mind of a stylized garden sojourn. Rooms, which are well-lit and quiet, comprise their own inviting worlds that have clearly been designed by experienced hoteliers who know what makes a home from home: Frette linens, bedside lamps that mimic brass flowers on the vine, big beds, plenty of space, robes and slippers, sparkling and distilled water, a scale, rain shower with Penhaligon’s soaps, and a little sitting area with a table. The rest of the property is artfully designed and dignified, too. The lobby bar serves nobly conceived craft cocktails, the full restaurant by chef Akira Back is tended by career service staff that’s amiable without sacrificing professionalism, and downstairs there’s a spa with a plunge pool and steam room that guests may access as part of the tariff. And everything smells good—the gentle fragrance of rose and tobacco, apparently. The little touches make this well-run hotel swoon-worthy and give it more personality than many of its luxury competitors.
