The four-star Hotel des Balances has one of Lucerne's Old Town's best locations; its front entrance gives onto a characteristic city square resplendent with vibrant frescoes, while its back entrance faces the Reuss River, with stunning views over to the Chapel Bridge and Jesuit Church. Inside, the sleek rooms (which face onto either the river or the square) blend modern comforts with high-end contemporary design, sitting area, padded bedheads, gilt-framed mirrors, parquetry flooring, and lots of white and neutral tones. Suites are decorated in a similar style, and some have wrought-iron balconies. Hotel guests are able to drive to the hotel, despite its location on a pedestrian square. The Balances onsite restaurant is a firm favorite with many locals and a highlight of any stay, especially the five- or seven-course set menu.
