The wonderfully pink four-star Hermitage, situated 4km (2.5 miles) east of Lucerne's center, has been in business since 1907 (although the oldest existing part of the complex only dates from the 1970s), and is perfect for those looking to be at a slight remove from the madding crowd, yet want to take advantage of the great outdoors without surrendering creature comforts. With its own 'beach' in summer, ice rink in winter, jetty, tennis court, and two restaurants, it's a swanky retreat with some beautifully renovated rooms in soothing, neutral tones, and each with a south-facing view of the lake (deluxe rooms have 'open' bathrooms, from which you can gaze at the lake as you soak in the tub) and private balcony. The hotel has 68 rooms, 20 of them premium doubles with balcony, 18 double deluxe, and 30 superior, all with Nespresso machines. There's also one suite available. Service is attentive and the entire property beautifully maintained.
