Nakht & Menna
If you're going to see one set of tombs in the Valley of the Nobles, this is the pair to see. Nakht was a high official in the court of Tuthmosis IV, and during his lifetime held the posts of astronomer, keeper of the king's vineyards, and chief of the granaries. Though some of the illustrations showing him and his wife (with whom he was buried) have been defaced, they retain a quotidian charm. There used to be a statue of the tomb's owner in the inner room, but this is now at the bottom of the Atlantic off Ireland; it was being transported to the United States in 1920 when the ship that was carrying it was sunk by a German submarine.
Menna, meanwhile, was a scribe of the fields, or agricultural inspector. My favorite illustrations are the pastoral scenes that feature quarreling girls and one who is pulling a thorn from her foot.
