Downtown Machala has loads of restaurants serving inexpensive local fare and seafood. If you're looking for Chinese food, try Chifa Central (tel. 07/2932-761), on Calle Tarqui between Avenida 9 de Octubre and Calle Sucre. The restaurant at the Gran Hotel Americano and the Oro Mar restaurant at the hotel Oro Verde are both very good and popular with locals and visitors alike. The best thing to do, though, is to head to nearby Puerto Bolívar, which has a string of oceanfront options specializing in excellent ceviches and seafood. In addition to Pepe's, Waikiki (tel. 07/2929-810) is another top choice on Puerto Bolívar's Malecón.
