Part of a mini-chain that includes the very similar Hostal Machu Picchu and Hostal Presidente, the bland, no-frills Continental is a good option for those on a budget. Completely renovated in 2003, the rooms are smallish and basic, although they're also clean and cozy, with hot water. Be warned: The hotel is literally right beside the train tracks, so opt for the top floor on the riverside to avoid noise from early morning trains. Breakfast is at the Presidente a short walk away.
