StreetXO
Punk chef Dabiz Muñoz’s flagship DiverXO is going to be too pricey for most visitors, but the good news is you can have a truly memorable lunch or dinner at StreetXO, his off-the-peg offering on the top floor of the Corte Inglés department store, for around 100 € for two. You can’t book, so get there early and wait in line to the sound of thumping beats. Once inside, the theatrics begin. Choose from a list of adventurously flavored cocktails, with or without alcohol, served in unusual receptacles—an enormous goblet, a smoking egg, a plastic bag. Before long you’ll be shown to a seat at the red rectangular bar surrounding the kitchen. A dozen staff—including servers who appear to be wearing straitjackets—rush about shouting instructions, tending flaming pans, creating tasty fusion dishes like a Thai/Mexican beef green curry, Korean lasagne, and kimchi and tuna sashimi croquettes. The whole experience is thrilling and packed with flavor. Look around and you’ll see that everyone—chefs, servers, and especially diners—is having fun.
