A striking Art Deco–era building near the head of Calle Larios, this Room Mate is set up with several self-sufficient apartments ranging from studios with a cooking corner to units with a separate bedroom and upstairs loft sleeping area. Expanses of contrasting marble and high-sheen black paint make the public areas look as if they had traveled in time from Paris circa 1930. The rooms continue the deco look with lots of black, gold, and taupe and smoothly streamlined furniture. Standard rooms are tight but well-designed, and apartments are spacious. The Picasso Museum is about a 5-minute walk away, and the city’s best shopping is just outside the front door. If Larios is full, Room Mate may suggest its other hotel, Lola, which is a fine hotel in a less convenient neighborhood that will be enduring extensive construction through 2015.
