It is a bit of a journey to go all the way up island to see the famous red cliffs of Aquinnah and the iconic red brick Gay Head Lighthouse, but it’s well worth the trip. From the large parking lot, a steep slope leads up to a small compound with several shops with tourist trinkets and Native American crafts, as well as a couple of casual though pricey eateries. But it is free to walk to the viewing platform to look out at the magnificent panoramic view of the cliffs and the ocean. The lighthouse nearby, which was recently moved away from the rapidly eroding cliff, is open daily in season.
