The Balestro del Girifalco involves a crossbow competition, processions, and displays of flag juggling all done by the town's terzieri (neighborhood representatives) in 13th-century costume. It's put on twice a year, on May 20 or the following Sunday and on the second Sunday in August. Photographers can take part in workshops or just enjoy the displays at the early July Toscana Foto Festival. Music lovers should make plans to be here during the first week in August for Lirica in Piazza (www.liricainpiazza.it), a short open-air opera festival featuring works by the likes of Puccini and Bizet.
