If the Flintstones had hired a big-name decorator, they might have been treated to a design-magazine-worthy abode like these luxurious cave sanctuaries overlooking the Gravina River gorge at the edge of Matera. Furnishings are rustic chic, with authentically old pieces scattered around cavernous spaces where soft light flickers off stone walls. Luxuries include freestanding tubs, fireplaces, and (in many rooms) terraces overlooking the sweep of green, rock-studded countryside. The attempt to re-create the look of a primitive cave dwelling without sacrificing creature comforts can seem a bit forced, but it’s hard to quibble with the luxury of stepping out of bed onto a cave floor heated from beneath. Breakfast, drinks, and some meals are served in an ancient church hewn out of the rock.
