Maui County produced a full-color map of the island with various cycling routes, information on road suitability, climate, mileage, elevation changes, bike shops, and safety tips. It’s available at most bike shops. You can also download it at www.southmauibicycles.com.
Cruising down Haleakala, from the lunar-like landscape at the top past flower farms, pineapple fields, and eucalyptus groves, can be quite a thrilling experience—but one that should be approached with caution. You’ll be riding on steep and curvy public roads without designated bike lanes and little to no shoulder. Despite what various companies claim about their safety record, people have been injured and killed participating in this activity. During winter and the rainy season, conditions can be particularly harsh. At the summit, temperatures drop below freezing and 40-mph winds howl. If you do choose to go, pay close attention to the safety briefing.
Maui’s oldest downhill company is Maui Downhill (www.mauidownhill.com; tel. 800/535-BIKE or 808/871-2155), which offers a sunrise safari bike tour, including continental breakfast and a stop for lunch (not hosted), starting at $169 ($149 if booked online). Mountain Riders Bike Tours (www.mountainriders.com; tel. 800/706-7700 or 808/242-9739) offers sunrise rides for $150 ($120 if booked online) and midday trips for $130 ($104 online). All rates include hotel pickup, transport to the top, coffee and pastries, bicycle, safety equipment, and a meal stop, not hosted. Wear layers of warm clothing—there may be a 30[dg] change in temperature from the top of the mountain to the ocean. Children under 12 and pregnant women can ride along in the van that accompanies the groups.
If you want to avoid the crowds and go down the mountain at your own pace (rather than in a choo-choo train of other bikers), call Haleakala Bike Company (www.bikemaui.com; tel. 888/922-2453). After assessing your skill, they’ll outfit you with the latest gear and shuttle you up Haleakala.
