Despite its name, this little-known beachfront retreat isn’t in Maalaea, nor is it a resort. Rather, it’s a collection of charming condos spread out across 5 acres at the far north end of Kihei. The four-unit townhouses with doublehipped roofs all have ocean views, big kitchens (with dishwashers), cable TV, and central air-conditioning—a nice perk in summer. Sugar Beach, the adjacent salt-and-pepper stretch of sand, extends 3-plus miles to Maalaea. Often windy, it’s not the best for swimming, but it’s unmatched for sunsets (and whale-watching in winter). This is a decent headquarters for adventurers who want to explore the entire island.
