Danielle Chomel and her husband rent out a piece of their hidden paradise in Haiku. She’s an expert orchid grower, and her blooms and bromeliads cover every inch of the property, from the entrance gate onwards. He’s a classic car buff, and if you ask nicely he might show you his immaculate antique Porsche and Devins. Tucked in a corner of their fecund fruit orchard and garden, the two-bedroom cottage is comfortably furnished with a smallish kitchen, washer/dryer, a California king–size bed with Tempur-Pedic mattress in each of the cozy bedrooms, and a pull-out futon in the living room. The off-the-beaten-path location is quiet and restful, offering a window into how real islanders live. It’s a 3-minute walk to a great breakfast spot, but you’ll have to drive 20 to 25 minutes to access Paia’s restaurants, shopping, and beaches.
