In tiny Haliimaile, the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it-town in between Paia and Makawao, you’ll find this casual and extremely convenient place to stay. Choose between one of seven rooms in the main house and a modest two-bedroom cottage with a full kitchen, day bed, and a large lanai that overlooks sugarcane and pineapple fields. Rooms in the “lodge” are fairly spartan, with shared bathroom and kitchen privileges, but if you’re looking for an affordable upcountry headquarters, this is a prime spot. If you happen to be traveling during a full moon, keep your eyes open at night: I’ve seen moonbows more than once here.
