In addition to the petroglyphs, some other attractions are not easy to find on your own, so I highly recommend taking a half-day guided tour of the island. Every pension can arrange a tour, or you can do it in advance through Maupiti Loisirs (tel. 67.80.95), run by Ui Terihaunui and the English-speaking Simone Chan, who also own Maupiti Loisirs pension. Ui and Simone offer two half-day tours. Their regular island tour includes a drive around the central island and a stop for a swim at Plage Tereia (and a wade across to Motu Auira). Their archaeological tour includes stops at the marae and a walk to the petroglyphs. The tours cost 2,000CFP (US$25/£13) per person.
