Mâcon has two churches worth a visit: the Neo-Roman Église Saint Pierre on place St-Pierre, the town’s largest church, and 19th-century Cathédral Saint Vincent on Square de la Paix. The Musée des Ursulines at 5 rue de la Préfecture (tel. 03-85-39-90-38; 2.50€ adults, free or ages 26 and under; Tues–Sat 10am–noon and 2–6pm, Sun 2–6pm), named after the 17th-century convent in which it is based, has archaeological finds from the area, a first floor dedicated to local life along with a space devoted to Lamartine’s life and work, and, on the second floor, an exhibition of artworks tracing the evolution of paintings over the last 5 centuries. From May to September, you can take boat trips along the River Saône for an afternoon or a day (book at the tourist office). However, the most interesting sights are within a 30 min. drive of the town.
