The quirky Hotel Tolarno is in the middle of St. Kilda’s cafe and restaurant strip and just a short stroll from the beach. A collection of 150 colorful contemporary works by Melbourne artists adorn the corridors throughout the retro-style (1950s and 1960s) building, many of them by Mirka Mora (after whom the hotel’s restaurant is named). Rooms vary, but all are modern and colorful. The most popular, the deluxe doubles, are in the front of the building and have balconies overlooking the main street. They are larger than the standard rooms, but if you are a light sleeper you might prefer somewhere away from the noise of the trams running by. Superior doubles come with a microwave, and two have Japanese baths. Suites come with a separate kitchen and lounge, but none have balconies.
