Rich in sights, Melrose is a highlight of the Borders: it offers one of the most beautiful ruined abbeys in the region, as well as diverse shopping. Abbotsford House, former home of Sir Walter Scott, is only 3km (1 3/4 miles) west, and Melrose is close to the Southern Upland Way, which passes to the north. Even if you can follow only part of this trail, take a day hike on the section along the River Tweed outside Melrose -- it's one of the most delightful and scenic walks in Scotland.
