This Midtown children’s museum offers fun, hands-on activities including a real fire engine for climbing and a kid-sized city where the little ones can shop for groceries, stop by the bank, try their hand at broadcasting the news, or climb up a 22-foot-tall skyscraper. One of the biggest draws at the museum these days is the restored 1909 Grand Carousel, which runs on the quarter hour (tickets $3). From Memorial Day to Labor Day, you can also visit the splash park and Dinosaur Dig, a massive sandpit where young archeologists can use tools and excavating equipment to dig for fossils and buried treasure. Check the website for special traveling exhibitions. Allow 2 to 3 hours.
