In a decidedly dingy shop on Front Street sits the legendary Gus’s, the first satellite location of the original in Mason, Tennessee, which has since spawned more than 30 locations nationwide. You’ll find lines outside the door here at nearly all times for good reason: Their just-spicy-enough, crispy battered chicken is the best in town, and possibly in the state. The skin is a dark molasses color and is shatteringly crispy, like biting into an eggroll. The deep-fryer gets the spiced skin crusty while keeping the meat juicy, tender, and full of flavor. Their beans, slaw, and pies are all good, but that’s not why you’re here, so don’t lose the plot. Service is friendly but slow, so don’t go here in a hurry. Or, if you want to game the system, call in a to-go order or order online, skip the line, and take that gloriously greasy sack of chicken down to Tom Lee Park and enjoy it in peace. You can also find Gus’s in East Memphis at 730 S. Mendenhall Rd.
