With a prime spot near the midpoint of Lincoln Road, this 30-year-old gallery complex became a groundbreaking redevelopment pioneer at a time when this pedestrian mall was still a pathetically dilapidated shadow of its original self. There are 45 studio spaces rented at deeply subsidized rates to artists in every medium from all over the world, and part of the deal is that they open their spaces and make themselves available to the public. It’s a great opportunity to get an eyeful of some stimulating, sometimes provocative sights and sounds, and what’s cutting-edge and upcoming in the art world. Things perk up especially on the first Saturday evening (7–10pm) of each month, when a “studio crawl” has all the artists out in force. Also open to the public is a second space, called Project 924, just down Lincoln Road at—you guessed it—number 924.
