This impressive collection, owned by one of the modern art world’s biggest collector families (that happens to include the late Steve Rubell of Studio 54 fame), is housed in a former industrial complex of six interconnected buildings in a sketchy area northwest of downtown Miami. It’s a priceless collection of more than 1,000 works of contemporary art by the likes of Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Richard Prince, Julian Schnabel, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Paul McCarthy, Charles Ray, and Cindy Sherman. But be forewarned: Some of the art is extremely graphic and may be off-putting. An artist-in-residence program features a diverse mix of emerging contemporary artists including Basil Kinkaid, Sterling Ruby, Kennedy Yanko, Oscar Murillo, and Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe. The museum features 36 galleries, a flexible performance space, an extensive research library, a bookstore, and an indoor-outdoor Basque restaurant, LEKU, that opens onto a courtyard garden filled with plants native to South Florida.
