Magnetic Hill
Locals discovered in the 19th century that any object capable of rolling, like wagons and barrels, seemed to defy the law of gravity on this little stretch of road by rolling uphill. When cars came along, folks would cut the engine at the bottom of a short stretch of downhill and gasp in amazement as they seemed to roll uphill. By the 1950s, this optical illusion was such an attraction, it boasted the biggest souvenir shop in the Maritimes. Today it’s not much more than a dated novelty, though if there are young children in the car, they’ll enjoy the short-lived mystery of rolling uphill backward in the car. Adjacent attractions will hold their interest longer. Wharf Village (souvenir shops and snack bars designed to look like a seaside village); video arcades, driving ranges, and the like, as well as the Magic Mountain water park (see above). Despite—maybe because of—its utter cheesiness, the complex of activities is a decent stop for families; there’s also a zoo, a Nordic spa and even a winery here. The complex is located in Moncton’s northwest outskirts.
